Outreach Overview

The Egagasini Environmental Science Education Programme supports school sciences in five secondary schools and the Marine Science Curriculum piloting schools. Houtbay Secondary School, in Houtbay; Masiphumele High School in Fishoek, Usasazo Secondary School in Khayelitsha; Ocean View Secondary in Ocean View; and Sophumelela Secondary in Phillipi, are all in Cape Town, Western Cape.

Objectives

The Environmental Science Education Programme focuses on:

  • primarily, to encourage and support the development of science skills to learners    
  • to create a platform for the integration of Marine Science Research into School Sciences curriculum

to promote an understanding of, create awareness and generate interest about our Oceans (Ocean Literacy)

Focus

The Programme seeks to achieve its goals through:

School Based Monitoring Projects

  • Adopt a float (Argo Floats) 
  • Adopt a Drifter Programme
  • Weather and Climate (weather stations)

Teacher/ Educator Support 

Data into the classroom resources to help educators teach Ocean Science related topics in Geography, Life, Natural and Marine Science school curriculum.

Learner support

  • Science Camps face to face and virtual experiences and lessons for learners in grades 9, 10 and 11.  
  • Workshops for learners on Ocean Observations and schools based monitoring Projects.

Awareness Platforms

Ocean Science Careers and exhibits to help create awareness and generate interests about ocean/marine science.

  • World Ocean’s day
